02. Statement of Intent

Brief 4: Music Video and Online

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (approx 400 words)

The first thing that struck me about the brief was the audience, and in particular the 'media literate' idea. With that in mind I decided to focus on intertextuality as I felt that would be an important characteristic of something that would appeal to that kind of audience. It was this decision that drew me to create some with a retro feel, both musically and aesthetically.  In order to create a connection between the audience and the performer to present them as accessible, I have decided to include direct mode of address throughout my music video by using close-ups and the artist singing to the camera. My main inspiration was bands like ABBA, as I have stayed with a 70s theme due to the song I have chosen being released in the late 70s. I will follow common conventions of ABBA videos such as 'Knowing Me, Knowing You', as I plan to include their freezeframes, split screens and I will include a similar ending of my artist walking off into the sunset.

Statement of Intent - Website

I will have a banner along the top with hyperlinks to the different pages on my website; my artists name will be at the top of the page with an image of him; I will have a subscription service at the bottom of the page; and I will also include links to social medias. My second page will be in a scrap book style in order to keep the aesthetic of the 70s. I will connect to my audience by talking directly to them in the text and direct address in images. My Audio-Visual piece will be a Q&A with the artist, including some behind the scenes, which I aim to use to make the audience feel connected with my artist. There will be tour dates and merchandise included on my website, which is a common convention I found on current pop singer's websites.

How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production? (approx. 100 words)

To connect my music video to my artist's website, I will include a link and suggest fans go to the website in the end credits of my video. On the website, fans can find behind the scenes pictures and videos about the creation of the video, with a suggestion to check out the music video. On my homepage, I will include posters saying my new song is 'out now' and show the different types of physical copies you can get the new song on.
