 Codes and Conventions of Narrative Music Videos


Goodbye Earl - The Chicks

-Starts like a film, includes credits establishing each of the characters in the narrative

-Shows pictures of the girls at the start, giving context for their life before the song starts

-Band is stood mouthing lyrics while in the background the story is taking place

-Choreographed dance sequences

-Outfits are trendy for the time

-Costuming is used for comedy through the exaggerated stereoytypes created

-0.25 mid close up on lead singer of band, creates a connection with the audience

-1.38 medium long shot, shows emotions from the band

-2.03 camera shot from beneath showing all the women looking down (meant to be to Earl's dead boy)

-2.29 medium long shot with band holding their instruments and singing which presents them a s performers

-2.31 the props are used to help tell the story as the pictures on the wall correlate to the time of year it is

-3.09 all characters and the band start dancing together in a long shot


ABBA - Knowing Me, Knowing You

-The video repeatedly zooms in onto freezeframes

-They're dressed in popular clothing and makeup for the time

-0.09 there's a close up on the main singer mouthing the lyrics

-0.18 the video freezes on a key movement 

-0.30 the two singers are stood together with a black background

-0.46 the camera pans between the two singers

-0.57 the camera tracks the singers around, and frames them with other people

-1.35 the main singer is framed to the left while the second singer is in the upper right in a feathered circle

-1.48 the camera pans around the singers in a circle

-2.10 the camera zooms in and focuses on the main singer, leaving the others out of focus

-2.38 the images fade into eachother rather than harsh cuts

-3.51 the video ends with the two women walking into the sunset


ABBA - Take a Chance on Me

- Both women are dressed fashionably for the time, and each with their own colours

-0.04 all four band memebrs are in their own seperate square

-0.29 close up on female singer, repeated with other singer afterwards

-0.53 artists are singing to the camera

-1.14 frame holds onto each artist seperately 

-1.19 feathering around the corners of the video

-1.49 tracking shot outwards until looking down on the two women dancing

-2.18 backlighting, coloured light outlining them

-2.37 slow-mo with videos over top eachother slightly opaque
